Underarm Lightening Laser Treatment

Dark underarms caused by pigmentation can be embarrassing for a lot of people, particularly in the Summer time when the areas are exposed. At City Laser Clinic we are able to lighten and brighten the underarm area to match the surrounding skin, in turn improving our client’s confidence. This is achieved with the use of our Q-switched laser and carbon mask. The non-invasive treatment technique is safe, non-painful, and produces visible results within a few sessions – no downtime required!

The laser treatment adopts the principle of selective photo-thermolysis that makes use of a particular wavelength to correct a specific skin condition. Compared to the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for underarm lightening, the Q-Switch laser is stronger, more effective, and highly customizable for targeted areas.

Underarm Lightening Laser Treatment Procedure

The procedure for this a non-invasive treatment and is comfortable and mild on the skin. It begins with the removal of any sweat or deodorant on area, followed by the application of our carbon mask. Once you are comfortable and the safety goggles are secured to protect your eyes, we will use the Q-switched laser to safely remove the carbon mask whilst brightening, lightening, and rejuvenation the skin that the area is passing. It is an entirely painless procedure, however you may feel a warm tingling sensation during the process.

How About the Downtime?

If you are concerned about the side effects of engaging in underarm lightening laser treatments, then you have nothing to worry about. You will experience a mild tingling sensation in the area and slight redness over the skin which can be observed for up to 2 hours after the procedure, however there is nothing else of enormous significance. You can resume your daily routine in no time when you apply our prescribed lightening products immediately after the process.

Why Q-Switched Underarm Lightening Laser Treatment?

Some dark underarm conditions are so severe that they don’t respond to even the most potent topical lightening creams. The Q-Switched Laser Treatment has a deep penetrating ability on the skin and will exert an effect on both epidermal and dermal pigmentation, with most attention on the latter.

The underarm lightening laser treatment penetrates deep into the skin, degrading the melanin which is subsequently eliminated from the body during a few training sessions.

Causes of Underarm Pigmentation

It is imperative to state that the factors responsible for the condition are preventable if given attention before it escalates. Certain factors are even considered as a symptom of underlying medical conditions.

Let’s examine the causes so that we can earmark the necessary preventative measures to put in place.

The first factor to pay critical attention to is the over secretion of melanin by the body. The medical term for this condition is ‘Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation’ (PIH), and is aggravated by burns, skin infections, atopic eczema, and constant friction. In most cases, over-the-counter lightening creams do not work with Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation as the condition lies more in-depth than the others. Melanin over secretion is further pronounced in dark-skinned individuals than fair-skinned individuals.

Also, skin care products including deodorants can have harsh effects on the skin and could lead to underarm pigmentation. The fragrance component of deodorants has been reported to be the leading cause of allergic contact dermatitis.

Conversely, hyperpigmentation of the skin, particularly over the underarm, groin and neck region, has been attributed to a dermatological condition known as Acanthosis Nigricans. Some of its symptoms include rash and rough feels of the affected skin area as well as skin tags. Diabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity are other conditions attributed to Acanthosis nigricans. Kindly check in with your doctor for a medical check-up if you notice any skin infection that may be caused by this condition.

Treatment for Underarm Pigmentation

The first step for the treatment of underarm pigmentation is to address any underlying factors stated earlier. For example, the regular use of moisturizer can effectively take care of eczema flare-ups and rejuvenate the skin. You can also drastically minimize skin darkening if you adopt constant use of sunscreen and sun protection. It is advisable to carry out a test patch on your skin when trying out any new skin product such as deodorant or active moisturisers.

Several topical treatments are available for pigmentation lightening procedure. These topical treatments may contain any of the wide range of lightening ingredients currently available on the market and possess depigmentation and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin. Some examples of these ingredients include hydroquinone, tretinoin, kojic acid, corticosteroids, and niacinamide. It should be noted that chemical peels and topical creams have little to no effects on dermal pigmentation, although they work perfectly for pigmentation affecting the epidermal skin layer.
