What Are Solar Lentigos?
Solar Lentigos (aka Liver Spots) are large spots that are found on our skin. As you may have guessed by its name, they are caused by the sun. They range in colours from light brown to red and even dark red or black. Unlike freckles, they are more likely to arise as we age and usually start appearing after the age of 40. They are more noticeable in those of us that have had more exposure to the sun and subsequently ultraviolet radiation. For this reason, they are predominantly found on areas of our body usually exposed to the sun. These areas usually include the hands, face (especially forehead), shoulders, and arms. However for those who regularly sunbake, you may also found them on the of your back, legs, abdomen, & chest.
Does This Mean I Have Other Health Problems?
In short, no. The term “Liver Spot” has arisen historically because it was believed that these spots were due to liver problems. Thanks to modern medicine, we now know that Liver Spots are not medically related to the liver. However they are similar in colour and shape to liver, so the term remained. In the majority of cases, Liver Spots pose no threat to our health and treatments are not necessary other than for cosmetic reasons.
Treatment for Solar Lentigo
We understand the negative impact that damaged looking skin can have, especially on our face & hands. Removal of solar lentigos are a common request for us at City Laser Clinic. To successfully remove these spots, we use our Medlite Q-Switched laser. As solar lentigo’s are surface pigmentations, we use the 532nm wavelength laser which rids the lesion within 1-4 treatments. These treatments are to be done at 4 week intervals for best results.
Our laser therapists have the experience, training, qualifications, and equipment to provide safe and effective treatment of skin pigmentations. As with all laser treatments, the frequency & number of treatments will depend on your skin type & area of concern. Contact us to arrange a free laser consultation to discuss a treatment plan that suits your needs.
Are There Any Precautions to Take During Treatment?
As with all laser treatments, you must avoid exposure to direct sunlight before, during, and after your treatments. You must also wear SPF daily in case of indirect or accidental direct sun exposure. Our experienced laser therapists will advise you based on your skin type and the nature of the treatments that you are receiving. As the darker spots can be mistaken for serious conditions, we will sometimes also refer you to your General Practitioner for further assessment. If we are in doubt, we will not treat until a Medical Clearance is provided.
