Solar Lentigos (Liver Spots)
At City Laser Clinic, our Therapists receive many requests to improve the appearance of client’s hands
Solar Lentigos (Liver Spots)
Our hands take the brunt of our life experience, when we forget to wear gloves our hands are exposed to many household chemicals, as well as being regularly exposed to the sun. The wear and tear of life is perhaps most noticeable on our hands.
Laser Therapy for Liver Spots
Solar Lentigos (Liver Spots) are commonly occur on our skin and are more likely to arise as we grow older and particularly over the age of 40, they are more common, and more noticeable in those of us that have had more exposure to the sun and the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight.
These skin blemishes occur in a range of colours from light brown to red and even dark red or black. The darker solar Lentigos (Liver Spots) can be mistaken for more serious skin issues including skin cancers such as melanoma. At City Laser Clinic, we often refer clients to their General Medical Practitioner for assessment and when in doubt will not treat until a Medical Clearance is provided.
Solar Lentigos (Liver Spots) are more common and noticeable in the parts of the body usually exposed to direct sunlight such as the hands and face including our forehead, as well as the shoulders, arms, but for those who sunbake, or have sunbaked, regularly these skin blemishes can appear on the back, legs, abdomen and chest areas.
The usual request for treatment of these blemishes we receive at City Laser Clinic is for the visible parts of the body, including face, hands and forearms; these being the parts of our bodies most commonly exposed to sunlight and more likely to form these unsightly spots. Using 532nm wavelength proven to have excellent results after 1 – 4 treatments 4 weeks apart.
Do these Liver Spots mean I have other health problems?
The term “Liver Spot” is a term that has arisen historically because it was believed that Liver Spots were due to liver problems. Modern medicine informs us that Liver Spots are not medically related to liver problems, but they do have a similar colour and shape to liver.
In the vast majority of cases Liver Spots pose no threat to health, and no treatment is necessary other than for cosmetic reasons. Occasionally, they have been known to obscure the detection of skin cancer. Some people wish to have these spots removed as they consider them unsightly; this can be done by various means including electrosurgery, laser treatment and cryotherapy.
At City Laser Clinic, our therapists have the experience, training and qualifications as well as the equipment to provide safe and effective treatment of skin pigmentations. As with all Laser therapy treatments, the frequency and number of treatments will depend on your skin type, the area affected and the size of that area. Skin rejuvenation for the Hands
In addition to Liver Spot removal, many clients inquire about an overall appearance of theirs Hands. At City Laser Clinic, we use the MedLite with 1064 nm wavelength to rejuvenate the dermis. The 1064nm wavelength laser is in the infrared wavelength that has been clinically shown to safely penetrate the dermis (deep layer of the skin) and stimulate the tissue, causing remodeling and building of collagen improving the appearance of the skin. As a result, our laser therapists are able to treat the papillary dermis without removing (or ablating) layers of the dermis as with previous methods.
Up until recently, the treatment for skin rejuvenation was limited to several harsh treatments including:
- Chemical peels intended to improve the appearance of the skin using chemicals to remove the dead skin, the underlying skin was usually less wrinkled than the old skin; and
- Surface ablation of the skin (dermabrasion), sometimes referred to as resurfacing because it caused the skin surface to regenerate, dermabrasion was achieved by several processes including older forms of laser devices referred to as “Ablative” laser treatment.
These processes have been applied to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and other blemishes on the hands. Now there is a safer and more effective technology available to achieve skin rejuvenation of the hands. There is considerable research informing us that Laser Induced Collagen Remodeling using a “Non-Ablative” laser process such as available with the MedLite is the safest and most effective method for achieving desirable results and appearance of youthful hands.
At City Laser Clinic, we understand the negative impact that damaged looking skin on our hands can have. We believe that our hands can cause us to appear older than our actual age and much older than we may want to present ourselves to our friends, family and the wider world.
City laser Clinic therapists have established that the MedLite laser is the most effective resource for treatment to rejuvenate our hands. City Laser Clinic therapists have the experience, training and qualifications to provide safe and effective skin rejuvenation treatment. As with all Laser therapy treatments, the frequency and number of treatments will depend on your skin type, the area affected and the size of that area.
