At City Laser Clinic, our experience is that most men are seeking treatment to remove hair from the large areas of the body such as the back, chest and legs. Unwanted back hair and thick or excessive chest hair can be uncomfortable and embarrassing.
Increasingly men with excessive hair feel self-conscious in our “Australian beach culture” and are searching for effective and longer lasting hair removal solutions. Some men are embarrassed by excessive body hair, especially on the back and shoulders and they seek a reduction. Apart from appearance, many me are having hair removal or reduction due to professional careers as a model or actor as well as sportsman and athletes including swimmers, cyclists and track and field athletes.
Men who dislike shaving can also benefit from laser hair removal on their beard area (lower face and chin). In addition to eliminating the need to shave every day, it will also prevent irritation and the development of folliculitis, a condition often experienced by men where one or more hair follicles becomes inflamed from shaving. At City Laser Clinic, we operate CANDELA GentleLase machines, the most trusted name in the industry. The GentleLase 755 nm alexandrite laser is recognised as the premier hair removal laser, treating quickly, comfortably and effectively, the CANDELA GentleLase also incorporates a Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD™) to maximise client safety and comfort. Significantly, the Alexandrite Laser is a medical grade Laser, it is NOT IPL.
Laser – The preferred method of hair Removal
Laser hair removal is safer and preferable to other treatments such as shaving and avoids the risk of “Shaving Bumps” and ingrown hairs from shaving. Other treatments such as Cream Depilatories can cause chemical burns, and to be effective Waxing requires hair growth that really misses the point and purpose of hair removal, and is painful and may lead to significant skin irritation and inflammation. Laser Hair Removal is the best way to treat and prevent in-gown hairs. Other options include electrolysis; electrolysis works by running an electric current into each hair follicle to heat and destroy the follicle. The electrolysis process involves the therapist inserting a sterile needle into each hair follicle in the area being treated, and then triggering a low-level electrical current. Because electrolysis is directed at one hair at a time, it is time consuming, tedious and dependant on the therapist identifying each follicle. At City Laser Clinic, we can treat Men of all ages. Young people under age 18 require the presence of a parent on the first consultation or written consent from a parent. The permanence of Laser Hair Removal means that it should be carefully considered and evaluated in the context of possible future personal needs and expectations. Laser hair removal treatment is generally not effective on naturally Grey, Red or Blonde hair.
What happens during the actual treatment?
Lasers work by delivering an intense beam of light that is absorbed by the skin. This light is converted to heat and is absorbed by the cells being targeted, while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. It is important to understand that hair in the active growth phase is most affected by treatments as the hair contains optimum levels of melanin, which is directly targeted by the laser. During laser hair removal treatment you and your City laser Clinic Laser Therapist will both wear safety goggles to protect your eyes during the procedure. The Therapist will use a small hand piece that touches your skin to deliver the laser pulse. You may feel a light spray of coolant on your skin before each laser pulse. We cover 18mm (20c coin) area per laser shot per second. Our laser machine has a dynamic cooling device. This cools the skin on contact, making the laser hair removal treatment more comfortable. Clients have compared the feeling to an elastic band snapping against the skin but patients’ individual pain threshold can vary.
Is Laser Hair Removal permanent?
Laser hair removal treatment permanently removes hair in follicles during the growth (Anagen) phase. At any time, about 85% of our hair is in the growth stage and will be removed by Laser. During this stage, the hair is most receptive to Laser because it is rich in protein, keratinized cells and melanin. The amount of time the hair follicle stays in the Anagen phase is determined by our genetic make-up. A hair’s Anagen phase may last for several years, with Anagen hairs representing about 85% of our hair. At the conclusion of the Anagen phase, the follicle enters the Catagen or transition phase and then the Telogen or resting phase when the hair begins to shed while the follicle is stimulated to begin a new cycle. Hair is not susceptible to Laser Hair Removal treatments during the Transition and resting phases. Please see the City Laser Clinic page about the Stages of Hair Growth. The duration of these phases of hair growth varies from person to person and is affected by our basic genetic (DNA) make-up, age, health and gender. Different hair colour and follicle shape also affects the timings of these phases. As hair follicles move back to the growth phase they become susceptible to laser treatment and can then be removed permanently, hence the need for follow up visits to treat the follicles that were not in the growth (Anagen) phase during earlier visits. Maintenance visits are also required to remove hair from new follicles that start to grow hair. This is why we recommend 2 to 3 Maintenance visits each year. Laser Hair Removal treatment is more effective with thick dark hair than it is with thin light hair. If you have natural dark hair and dark skin you can still be benefit from laser treatment for hair removal, however additional treatments are usually required to achieve satisfactory results. Laser treatments have been used for many years for a variety of medical and cosmetic procedures. CANDELA GentleLase, the most trusted name in the industry, has pioneered the development of some of the safest and most effective laser technologies and products available on the market today.
How Many Treatments?
At City Laser Clinic, we recommend at least 6 to 8 treatments, 6 weeks apart for a significant reduction up to 70%, this does require your commitment to treatment each 6 weeks, or as otherwise assessed and advised by your City Laser Clinic therapist based on assessment of your hair and skin type. However, if you wish to achieve up to 85% hair loss, men usually require up to 12 and sometimes 15 treatments due to the higher levels of the male hormone testosterone. Any remaining hair will be much lighter and softer and will be controlled by maintenance treatments each 4 months. On the completion of your laser hair removal treatment you may wish to undertake Skin Rejuvenation treatments program to improve an overall appearance of your skin.
What you need to do before Laser Hair Removal Treatment:
Unlike waxing, there is no need for long hair. Hair is to be short for your laser treatment, about 2 to 3 days hair growth. 3mm maximum length. Shave or trim the hair before your treatment. Shorter hair ensures the treatment is more comfortable for you and allows the laser energy to travel down to the follicle faster. Avoid sun exposure or solarium on the area for 2 to 3 weeks before your treatment. You can use Spray Tan 24 hours after the laser hair removal treatment. At City Laser Clinic, our experienced qualified therapists will advise you based on your skin type and the nature of the treatments that you are receiving.
Post Treatment Care:
In general, avoid sun exposure, solarium or fake tan on the area for 2-3 weeks before laser hair removal treatment, and again 1-2 weeks after the laser hair removal treatment. At City Laser Clinic, we recommend wearing 30+ SPF. Be very aware of your skin in the sun after the treatment, your skin is sun sensitive and be careful not to expose the area to the direct sun. Your hair can take up to 2 weeks to fall out; it may fall out as late as the 14th day. Exfoliate the area 3 days after the laser hair removal treatment to assist the process of the hair falling out. If some hair does not fall out (this does happen sometimes), you may shave the area and please inform your therapist on your next visit. Once your laser hair removal treatments have started, forcing the hair from the follicle will reverse the effect of the treatment. Therefore, waxing, plucking and Emjoy treatments are not recommended. However, if needed you may shave, trim, use depilatory creams or clippers between treatments.
Is Laser Hair Removal suitable for everyone?
The ideal candidate for Laser Hair Removal is a person with light skin and dark hair. People with light skin and dark hair will receive the best results (up to 75% reduction after 6 to 8 treatments). People with dark skin and dark hair can still be treated, but may need more treatments. People with blonde, red and grey hairs cannot achieve significant hair removal with available laser machines. To achieve the best results City Laser Clinic uses the CANDELA GentleLase – Genuine Laser for hair removal and NOT IPL. The CANDELA GentleLase delivers a laser beam on a specific wavelength most suited to hair removal. The laser energy that is used is more effective than other processes and assures safe destruction of the active (Anagen) hair follicles in the treated area. Other Systems compared with CANDELA GentleLase Other processes including IPL/ SPL (Pulse Light Systems) machines deliver a wide range of wavelengths and have a higher risk of damaging your skin because of their higher energy levels. These wavelengths only operate at a superficial depth, and are less effective than the CANDELA GentleLase used by City laser Clinic. At City Laser Clinic, we see the great results our clients receive from our CANDELA GentleLase genuine Laser treatment.
