The facial muscle groups usually affected by lifestyle, and where damage is likely to cause premature appearance of old age, are:
Mouth muscles (orbicularis oris) encircle the mouth and connect with the upper lip and the lower lip, cheeks, nose and surrounding areas. Often called the “kissing muscles” these muscles are involved in puckering of the mouth. Repetitive puckering as smokers do when they draw on a cigarette can result in deep lines on the upper lip. Another good reason to stop smoking!
Chin muscles (mentalis) – The small bundle of muscle at the front of our chin, it raises the chin and makes the lower lip protrude when we pout. Maintaining tone of this muscle achieves firmer, fuller lips without the need for collagen filler.
“Smile Muscles” (risorius) – The muscles formed at the corners of our mouth they work to retract the corners of our mouth when we smile – exercising and maintaining tone of this muscle group helps to create an upward turning mouth and a happier expression and appearance.
Lips (zygomaticus major and minor) – These muscles work to draw the angle of the lips backwards and upwards to form a smiling expression – loss of tone of these muscle groups creates a downward slope to the mouth and may create the fixed appearance of a “sneer”.
Eyelid muscles (orbicularis oculi) – An important muscle group surrounding our eyes, they work to close the eyelids in sleeping and blinking. Using the whole muscle at once causes the skin to create folds from the outer corner of the eyelids – ‘crow’s feet’.
Eyebrows (epicranius) – This group of muscles raise the eyebrows. Exercising and toning these muscles softens the appearance of the brow and presents a more relaxed appearance to our face.
Nose muscles (procerus) – The muscle bundle formed across the bridge of the nose. These muscles draw down the eyebrows and create wrinkling across the bridge of the nose. There are considerably more facial muscles than we have listed here.
The above list shows the more significant muscle groups relating to appearance and expression. All our facial muscles interact to create the range of facial expressions that we use every day and create our unique “face”.
